Le rabbin Tom Cohen est né et a grandi près de Portland, Oregon aux États-Unis.

Il continue ses études de premier cycle à l’université du Judaïsme, à Los Angeles, Californie, où il obtient sa licence de lettres en études juives. Avec l’encouragement du rabbin Marshall Meyer z”l et sous l’influence du rabbin Elliot Dorff, il aspire au rabbinat. Au cours des six années suivantes, il continue ses études à Los Angeles où il obtient une autre licence en littérature hébraïque, puis passe deux ans à Jérusalem. Enfin, il déménage à New York, où il complète son Master en littérature hébraïque. En 1991 il est ordonné sous l’autorité du séminaire théologique juif (JTS). Le rabbin Cohen arrive à Paris durant l’hiver 1992 et ne l’a jamais regretté. En 1993, avec une poignée de familles, il fonde Kehilat Gesher, la synagogue franco-américaine de Paris.

Malgré toutes les épreuves dues à sa représentation d’un courant du judaïsme qui n’est pas encore bien connu par la communauté juive française, le rabbin Cohen apprécie de travailler ici, en France, de participer à la construction et au développement d’une communauté ouverte, tolérante et égalitaire – preuve que le judaïsme libéral est capable de fournir des réponses sensées aux juifs de France n’étant pas ou peu rattachés à une synagogue.

Pour le rabbin Cohen, être le rabbin d’une communauté est un travail idéal. « Je passe mes journées à reconnecter les gens avec leur héritage – les aider à porter un nouveau regard, et parfois, un premier « vrai » regard sur leur judaïsme » dit-il. « Je les aide à creuser dans le sens profond du lexique juif de la prière, de l’étude, des actes de tsédakah (justice) et de ‘hessed (actions de générosité désintéressée), du rituel, et aider les gens par le biais du tikkoun olam (réparation du monde). »

Le rabbin Cohen trouve particulièrement satisfaisant le temps passé en tête-à-tête avec les fidèles, écoutant ce qui les inspire, ce en quoi ils croient et espèrent, ce qui les trouble, ce qui les motive pendant les périodes difficiles et comment ils partagent les bons moments de la vie.

Il est reconnaissant envers les membres de Kehilat Gesher de l’inviter dans leurs vies, leurs foyers et leurs familles. Le rabbin Cohen est marié au rabbin Pauline Bebe et est père de quatre adolescents et jeunes adultes.

Rabbi Tom Cohen was born and raised near Portland, Oregon in the USA. During his studies at Portland State University, he became more and more interested in religious philosophy and the question: “what does it mean to be Jewish?”

He continued his undergraduate studies in Los Angeles, California at the University of Judaism, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies. With the encouragement of Rabbi Marshall Meyer z”l and under the influence of Rabbi Elliot Dorff, he decided to pursue the rabbinate.

Over the next six years, he continued his education in Los Angeles, where he received another degree in Hebrew Literature, followed by two years in Jerusalem. Finally, he moved to New York City, where he completed his Master in Hebrew Literature. In 1991 he was ordained under the auspices of the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Rabbi Cohen arrived in Paris in the winter of 1992 and has never looked back. In 1993, along with a handful of families, he founded Kehilat Gesher, the French-American synagogue of Paris.

Despite all the challenges involved in representing a stream of Judaism that is still not yet well known amongst French Jewry, Rabbi Cohen loves working here in France, participating in the construction and development of an open, tolerant and egalitarian community—proof that Liberal Judaism can provide meaningful answers to the unaffiliated, and under-affiliated, Jews of France.

For Rabbi Cohen, being a congregational rabbi is the ideal job. “I spend my days connecting people back to their heritage—helping them take a second look, or at times, a first ‘real’ look at their Judaism,” he says. “I help them delve into the deeper meaning of the Jewish vocabulary of prayer, study, acts of tzedakah (justice) and Hessed (deeds of gratuitous generosity), ritual, and helping people by means of tikkun olam (repairing the world).”

Rabbi Cohen is especially gratified by the time he spends one-on-one with congregants, hearing what inspires them, what they believe in and hope for, what troubles them, what keeps them going during difficult times and how they share life’s good moments. He is grateful to Kehilat Gesher’s members for inviting him into their lives, homes and families.

Rabbi Cohen is married to Rabbi Pauline Bebe and the father of four teenagers and young adults.

הרב כהן הגיע לפריז בחורף 1992 ומאז לא עזב אותה. ב-1993 יחד עם מספר משפחות הקים את קהילת גשר, בית הכנסת הצרפתי-אמריקאי של פריז.

למרות הקשיים הרבים הנובעים מכך שהיהדות המתקדמת היא לא זרם מקובל בצרפת, הרב כהן אוהב לעבוד בצרפת, ולקחת חלק בבניית קהילה פתוחה, סובלנית ושיוויונית - ראייה לכך שהקהילה המתקדמת יכולה לתת מענה ליהודים הצרפתים הרבים שלא מזדהים עם אף אחד מהזרמים האחרים הקיימים במדינה.

לדעתו של רב כהן, להיות רב של קהילה היא עבודה מושלמת. "רוב זמני מוקדש לחיבור של אנשים בחזרה למסורת שלהם, לעזור להם להביט באופן שונה, ולפעמים אפילו בפעם הראשונה, ביהדותם". "אני עוזר להם לצלול למשמעות העמוקה של מילים כמו תפילה, לימוד, צדקה וחסד, תיקון עולם".

רבי כהן אוהב במיוחד את הפגישות האישיות עם חברי הקהילה, כדי לשמוע מהם מה נותן להם השראה, במה הם מאמינים, למה הם מקווים, מה מעציב אותם, מה עוזר להם לעבור משברים ואיך הם חיים את הרגעים הטובים בחיים. הוא מודה לחברי הקהילה על כך שהם חולקים איתו את חייהם, בתיהם ומשפחותיהם.

הרב כהן נשוי לרבה פולין בב ואב לארבעה ילדים גדולים.
